Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a joint found on each side of the face where your mandible (jaw bone) attaches to your skull. TMJ dysfunction is a condition that may cause pain and altered movement when opening and closing your mouth. Others experience TMJ Dysfunction while sleeping (grinding), during stressful situations (clenching) or while carrying on conversations. Physical therapy assessment and treatment is focused on uncovering the source of your symptoms and treating the cause of the dysfunction, not just the site of pain.
